As part of our new blog series, we’re getting up close and personal with members of our team.  The team is well-known to our patrons for being our number one asset, and many of them have been here for over a decade.

Rich, our Golf Professional has been with us for 26 years, having started as the Assistant Golf Professional under Duncan McDowell.  After one year, he was promoted to Golf Professional after passing his PGA exams in 1996, taking over from Joe Higgins.

We catch up with Rich in the Golf Shop to see what he has to say about his time at Patshull Park…

“I think we’ve got the best team we’ve ever had here, and it’s great to have familiar faces to work alongside with every day like the Greenkeeping team.  They work incredibly long hours yea-round and produce some fantastic putting surfaces. I have total trust in their ability to maintain and improve the golf course, and I thoroughly enjoy playing the course after-hours.

It’s also been wonderful to see the golf course mature through the years into one of the finest in the Midlands.  Because of Patshull’s history, we now have an impressive collection of trees that were planted in the 1700 – 1800s like Douglas Firs, Oaks, Wellingtonia to name a few.

I’m excited for what’s to come at Patshull and know that we could be one of the top golf resorts in the Midlands within the next few years.”

What do you enjoy doing in your own time?

“Outside of work, i am a massive history fan and have been metal detecting since i was eight years old. I have a particular interest in local history, so being able to dig up local artefacts is brilliant fun for me. My Godfather got me into metal detecting and used to take me out on a regular occasion.”

Rich has accumulated a lot finds and documented them on his YouTube channel.  He hosted a popular metal detecting competition at Patshull Park with permissions from the landowners around Burnhill Green.  Here is a video of him metal detecting around Patshull church..

Rich is also an avid Wolverhampton Wanderers FC fan as well as a big family man.

“I like to spend time with my family down in my holiday home in Harlech where I fish with my two sons. We spend a lot of time on the beach and I love the downtime by the coast. I also love cooking especially if I get to use a cooking toy like my ice cream maker.  My sons and I have made some fantastic Terry’s chocolate orange-style ice cream!  We also have an air fryer, and a hamburger maker. I love coffee and compare different beans to trying different wines.”
